at the heARt of a maker

is the ability to get lost in creating something from nothing.

I consider myself a full-time maker! What about you?

I love working with my hands and have always been curious to understand how things are made; from legos, model airplanes and richter sets to making pots, producing glaze and firing a kiln to make ceramic art.

There is a simplicity to life, to being a maker that brings me peace that is reminiscent of spending time in the great outdoors, where I feel most inspired by the delicate balance of an ecosystem capable of sustaining all forms of life.

For me, it’s not learning to master the clay, but to understand it’s character

and how I can work with it to create masterful work that inspires others.

I began my life-long journey as a maker working alongside my mentor and ceramics teacher, Guy Gellner, during my adolescence and it’s just stuck with me ever since. After graduating college, I dedicated my professional focus to blending elements of fine design with functional craft to make utilitarian ceramic wares in my town of Cincinnati, OH.

Prior to going out on my own in 2013, I worked with Cincinnati area ceramic artists until I found a home growing with the dedicated guidance of Lawrence Kearns, a full time Cincinnati potter.

This experience coupled with a lifetime of practice and a degree in Ceramic Arts and Metalworking allowed me to launch Sam Hitchman Ceramics in January 2013.

I have been full-filling my dream of being a professional maker and connecting with other makers ever since.

I currently make, travel and sell my work at juried fine art and craft shows throughout the East Coast and Midwest and have been hand-selected to attend over 200 fine art shows throughout my career.

I am a maker. It’s simply what I love to do.

Let’s get makin’!

I am humbled by makers, being a mentor to artists and building connection through creating fine-art and craft with others.

The heART of the Maker Community

Mentorship and learning is a huge part of our development as artists, whether we intend to make for making’s sake or make to sell. Surrounding ourselves with a like-minded community can only help us grow in our ability to create art and craft that will impact the world.

I am excited to invite you to join our heART of the Maker Community, it’s completely free to you and my hope is that it will give you access to resources you may not otherwise have at your disposal. Click below to join the community and when we have educational content to share, we will send it your way!

I look forward to sharing inspiration with you.
